The Pursuit of Happyness

April 20th 2008 20:08

This film is based on a true story and is about a man, Chris Gardner (Will Smith) who has big dreams but goes through an awful lot to take care of his family. It takes place in 1981 (which explains Smith's hair), and it starts with him on a bus carrying this weird looking contraption. He explains what it is, a bone-density scanner which is something that Doctors would use, and how he spent his life savings on a boat load of them to sell them...except not many doctors really want them.
So he and his wife, Linda (Thandie Newton), are now in debt to where she has been working double shifts for 4 months and neither are making enough to pay any of the bills.

So one day, as Chris was trying to sell one of those scanners, he stops in front of a stock broker firm and finds out that ANYONE can apply. Here is an opportunity for him to finally take care of his family. He tells Linda of his plans and she just makes fun of that idea. As he is applying for the internship he finds out that it would be a 6 month program and he wouldn't
get paid for it. He thinks about turning it down, but because his wife leaves him, he was pushed to take it so that he could take care of him and his son, Christopher (Jaden Smith). Throughout the 6 months, he was evicted and forced to live in a motel, shelters, and sometimes on the streets.

The Pursuit Of Happyness, is such a wonderful film!! It's hard to believe that Will Smith started out as a rapper because as he has grown as an actor, his career has grown right along with him. In this movie, his portrayal of this man is outstanding! He actually made me feel what he was feeling as he was going through it. My first comment after I finished watching was "I hope that stupid wife feels like an idiot for leaving him!!" If she had waited those 6 months, MAN!! And then how well he takes care of his son is so endearing and powerful, he proved that even through bad times a father's love will never be broken.
What I found to be so cool about the movie, is that the son Christopher, is Will Smith's son in real life! And he does such an excellent job as well! I think you can tell that I recommend this movie. It showed me that even though I think my life sucks right now, that there really is someone who has it a lot worse out there. I honestly don't think that was the point of the movie, but it was an eye opener for me. That and that ANYTHING is possible! Two thumbs up in my book!!

Will Smith lives a very personal life. Read how others handle their fame in A Price Being Famous

By the way, I find it interesting that he actually got his own son playing a main character within that film

He does rock, doesn't he! And you make a good point in that he got his son to play, but I think I already pointed out how I thought that was really cool and what a good job he did! I wonder if it's gonna happen that way a lot more now?
