The Modern Iranian cinema
The Iranian films have gained popularity and respect from the whole world, due to the high level of creativity. The Iranian film makers tend to choose real problems to be their subjects, like earthquakes, womens' rights, poverty,etc....They make artistic pieces out of rigid circmstances. Low budget is the reason behind their success in drawing the line between documentary and fiction. Lack of money is not the only obstacle that provoke film makers to reach their zenith, regulations and rules that are set by the government, has a stronger role. Women should wear the veil, no obscene language, no politics, sex and romantic scenes are strictly prohibited.
The Iranian film conquered the U.S. although they walk in different roads. In 1996, the film maker Jafar Panahi 'the white Balloon' won the best foreign film from the New York Critics Circle; in additon to, it became the first Iranian film to be distributed in U.S. The film discusses a young girl dream to buy a goldfish on new year' eve. Later on, some Iranian films are seen in the museums in the U.S.
They are films that you have to watch if you are interested in this film industry.
*Gabbeh-97-presented by Mohsen Makhamalbaf, who talked about the lives of nomadic Iranian carpet weavers in a lyrical sense.
*Bashu-early 80's-talks about the fear and hardships of wars, particularly the Iran-Iraq war; directed by Bahram Beyzaie.
*Hamoon- a dark comedy directed by Dariush Mehrjui. It's about a midlife crisis and martial relationships that some film critics compare it to Woody Allen's movie 'husbands and wives'
The Iranian cinema is no ordinary cinema, it helps you see reality as it is and that's the fascination because you will never feel that you are watching, you will feel you are one of the characters.
