Death Proof

death proof

Death Proof is the second part of the Tarantino/Rodriguez film "Grindhouse", and this part of the film was written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. It starts out with 3 girls cruising along in a car talking about various things including going up to one of the girl's father's cabin at the lake. Before they leave for the lake, they make various stops at bars and meet up with friends. One of the girls, known as Butterfly (Vanessa Ferlito), notices how everywhere they go, there is a mysterious car that follows them. At their last bar stop, Butterfly goes outside for a smoke and when the outside lights turn on, she sees that same car. After a lot of talking, and a lap dance, they befriend the mysterious car driver, Stunt Man Mike (Kurt Russell), and they part ways. He agrees to take home this girl Pam (Rose McGowan), and the other girls go to the lake house.

In a sudden twist he not only explains to Pam why his car is death proof, but shows her as well and kills her. Then he goes up the road that the other girls are traveling on, passes them, stops, turns around, speeds up to over 100 mph, and then has a head on collision with the other girls...killing them instantly.

Then we are taken to a different town, with 4 different girls. There is another segment of nothing but talking and we find out that one of them (Zoe Bell) wants to make a pit stop and check out a white 1970 Dodge Challenger. They make the stop, get the car,
and three of them (Rosario Dawson, Tracy Thoms, and Zoe Bell) set out to do a major stunt while the other girl (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) stays behind to keep the owner of the car company. While the three girls are doing their stunt, Stunt Man Mike shows up and starts his games. But low and behold, after 15 minutes (probably more like 2 hours) of literally scaring the shit out of these poor girls, they turn the table on him...

I personally am a little indifferent about this movie. The majority of the time I was bored because of all the talking that took place. But then I find myself wanting to see it again and again. There were a couple of things that I really enjoyed about the film and one was the fact that the feel of the movie was set in the 70's...from beginning to end. Another was how Kurt Russell was the bad guy. He's played bad guys before, but none like this, and he was so smooth about it too. Considering it's been a while since we've seen him in a movie, he chose a really good role to play. What I found to be so funny about the movie was how at the very end when the table was turned on the guy, he turned into a little weeping baby,
when throughout the movie he was so suave and "death proof". Boy was he proved wrong!! If you are a Tarantino/Rodriguez fan, and you haven't seen this, I seriously suggest that you do. As a friend of mine said, "you will only appreciate it if you are a fan of QuentinTarantino". And one thing that is true, I do appreciate it!

i loved this film and im not even particularly a big fan of tarantino . . . i thought all the talk was one of the highlights, a bit of female philosophy to set us up for how the action is gunna go down . . . also shows the similarities between the two groups of girls

i really enjoyed your review, i recently reviewed this film aswell CLICKHERE to see all my thoughts

I really enjoyed the first round of the girls talking, but then when the second group (the ass kicking group) started, I actually groaned. But you are right, and I did want to mention it in my review, was that even though there is a lot of talking, it does let you in on how girls are in a group. In both I definitely got acquainted with them and felt like I was not only a party chic, but a bad-ass chic as well.

Thanks for enjoying my review, but I think yours was a lot better, LoL!

i thought zoe bell's accent sounded a little out of place in the second group, but the stories they tell essentially reveal that they are fit and athletic and familiar with cars and weapons so we go into the car chase scene having confidence in them . . . ill have to check out more of your reviews in future!

You are right in that her accent was out of place, at first I thought it was fake, but then it just grew on me.

I look forward to seeing/hearing from you in the future
