Faten Hamma (27/05/192?)

In the Egyptian cinema, a name like Faten Hamma is important as Coco Chanel in fashion. Faten Hamma started at the age of 10, in a musical with Mohamed Abdel Wahab, a well known musician. Her father send her photos to the renowned film director Mohamed Karim, those photos led her smoothly to this joyful role as the protagonist's young neighbor. Her acting talent was surprisingly impressive that led Karim changed some of the aspects of her role to show her great talent. Karim brought her music and dancing teachers to prepare her to be the second 'Sherly Temple'.

Hamma has a very strong personality, determined, punctual, physically attractive, small in size, intelligent, quick learner, sweet and spontaneous. Audience felt that she is one of them.
After finishing secondary school in early 1940's, Faten was enrolled in the cinema institute, to maintain professionalism. Hamma was known of her decent roles. In the late 50's, she challenged herself by accepting the leading role in 'I don't sleep'. In this film, she played Nadia, the rich youth who was insidiously evil and everyone thought of her as an angel. Hamma always tries to be selective and chooses targeted roles. In the seventies, her film 'need a solution' discussed the difficulty for a woman to get a divorce and how women felt helpless. The film was a success to the degree that affected highly some aspects of the law of divorce in Egypt. No wonder that most of her films gained great success; audience call her ' the lady of arab cinema'. Her prestigious, attractive and demure style made people respect her before loving her.
Hamma has always been secretive. She hardly speaks of her personal life. No one knows any of the reasons behind her failure of her two marriage experiences. Her first husband was Ezz El DIn Zufaker, a film director that worked with her in the beginning of her career. A few years after she gave birth to their daughter Nadia, their marriage ended. Her second husband was Omar El Sherif, before he was choosen to act in hollywood. They have a son Tarek. He acted only once with his father in 'Doctor Zhivago' as Zhivago the child. The couple spilt in the mid sixties. Omar El Sherif was still in hollywood and Hamma was in her zenith. Later, she met her third husband, who works as a doctor.

After more than 100 films, 4 TV series, it's hard to mention the Egyptian cinema without refering to Faten Hamma.
